cute ladies on bicycles

This is a JP Weigle 1970′s time trial bike. Thanks go to Peter Weigle for the use of some of his photos. He was kind enough to offer them out in my work when I spoke to him at NAHBS. Maybe I will purchase a bike from him in payment some day. I’m sure the wife would love that.
I am getting antsy for the 200k this weekend. I keep looking at the (rough) route on google maps and imagining the pain I’m going to feel. I’ve been through a little bit of pain in the past though. It shouldn’t be too bad.
I’m interested in on the bike nutrition. I love eating, but it gets hard to choke down energy products every hour. I’ve been experimenting with powdered products for the water too. There is just so much on the market and so little time to get it down.
I am also wondering at what point I’ll break the habit of trying to keep “the group” together on these longer rides. I know I’m not usually on pace with Chris and Joby at this point. It is nice to have people to ride with, but I need to get used to the fact that we are going to be at different levels on different days. Thankfully, there are plenty of other really nice guys and girls on the road. I’m bound to end up in a group at some point.
SIR released a newsletter today in PDF format. Peter McKay wrote an article on the 100k from 2 weeks ago. He mentioned the “couple of cute women on bicycles” asking for me. I wish I would have been able to catch Jane and Michele on the ride through South Park. Thanks for trying though ladies!

i know you mean about food! for the brevet i’m gonna bring some caprice sandwiches, although eating those on the go is just about impossible.. we’ll see. but i do know that i can’t eat energy bars for more than a few hours, i just get sick of em.
also i clicked out the route on veloroutes, check out the elevation profile: http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=8229
that climb up to greenwood (in the mtns) should be painful, although the descent should be a blast!
I use Perpetuem made by Hammer Nutrition and would swear by it for these events. It’s a powder that as they say on the bottle “delivers stable, long-term energy hour after hour, with no stomach distress or GI issues…”
No kidding, the stuff is golden. I just mix some in a couple bottles and then bring some for refills later. It doesn’t taste half bad and I really notice the difference when I start to bonk.
Hey, I’ll look for you on the ride. I think I saw you in your Shins last time – I ride a blue Rivendell Romulus and wear knickers as well. Enjoying your blog.
Alright the 200K! The 200 is a great learning event. Unless you make really bad decisions you have a very good chance of finishing AND having fun regardless of your background. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying anything about you, just offering some reassurance that it will be fun, you’ll get hammered but you’ll finish. After that though, you have to get a little smarter about your riding or you get tripped up.
This particular ride is a great course. From waters edge to the foot of Mt Rainier, gotta like that. There are a few really tough (short) climbs, but for me the long slog to Greenwater is more of a challenge. It is just a lot of miles of pushing against a slight grade as the air temp continues to drop. And of course, if you are a back of the packer like me, you get the joy of watching almost everyone on the ride returning ….as you are still slogging toward Greenwater. The Chili feed at Gregs is fantastic though, chilli on white rice, mmmm.
Think about riding a group event. The Fleches, Darts, and Arrows are actually the most fun rando events. Put your name out there and see if someone will pick you up on their team. You will be suprised how much fun it will be.
Life will get much better when your Schmidt hub comes along, … but Peter White will drive you crazy.
Have a safe ride.
PS: I’m planning to re-engage for the second series; If you’ll slow down perhaps we can ride together some.
Yr Pal DrCodfish
Matt – I can’t wait
Jack – The Hammer line is on my list. It is hard to figure out what works without being out there and discovering. What tastes good at home can be horrible on the road. I hope to see you out there.
DrCodfish – My friends and I are kicking around some team rides. I’d love to do a slower paced ride with you. Just let me know when you plan on being out there. Also, Peter has been pleasant so far, but I’ve heard some stories…
Nice drawing!
I’m seconding the Hammer Nutrition recommendation. I use HEED for shorter rides (usually with Endurolytes powder mixed in) and Sustained Energy for 2+ hour rides. Recoverite after races. I haven’t tried Perpetuem, but have heard good things about it for endurance riding. I also like Hammer Gel. I’ve definitely found their products to be better for me from the GI standpoint than some other stuff I’ve tried.
