thighs and thighs

Yeah, so this is starting to become a food blog now… Sorry for the crap quality pictures. The iPhone works fine outside and chokes quite a bit indoors (without flash). Still, you get the idea.
Last Saturday I took the fixed gear out on SIR’s Winter Training Series around the Dash Point area. I wasn’t the only one dumb enough to ride it single, but I was the only one dumb enough to ride it fixed. I did better than I thought I might. Still, I had to walk a couple of times up some hills that were too steep.
I was pretty convinced that I need a much smaller gear ratio up until this last weekend. I still think I need to step it down, but I don’t think it needs to be that much. I am rather liking the ability to ride down hills without having to blow out my knees or ride my breaks all the way down. If I dropped down a couple of gear inches, I think I could get up just about anything and still be able to spin it out on the descents. At this point though, it might take too much money to fix that situation. That still isn’t growing on the trees around here.

What size ring and cog are you using?
48t and 17t in back… so about 76 gear inches with the size of my tires (32mm). That is, if you can trust no name Sheldon Brown.
The problem is that the bike has vertical drop outs, so chain length determines my gear ratio right now. I might be able to get a smaller crank and play with different sizes in the back, but it really seems like a lot of time and effort for something that I am relatively happy with. It is mainly my commuter bike and I have a pretty flat ride in to work.
I have the same size ring, cog, and tires on my fixed gear. I haven’t really taken it out to any serious hills yet, so your description of the ride had me curious.
It isn’t hilly by SIR standards, but the ones that are in it can be pretty brutal. The most notable are climbing from Kent up Reith Rd. and a spot before you get to Dash Point coming up from the water front. There are about 3 or 4 blocks of stair climbing hills. It was tough last year with the gears.
You can check out the route here:

Yeah, since we were about the same speed on average, you will be happy to know that I went up a few of those hills in a 26 x 25. A tad lower. Good ride. Now it’s off to the garage for a little trainer action. I would think a little Fin du Monde would be an appropriate ending to a Fleche.
