your help is needed!
Posted on April 28th, 2009 by Robert
I have a really life altering decision to make and I need to enlist your help and support. I can’t decide on a color for the new bike that Dan Boxer is building for me. I am definiately leaning one direction at this point, but both are so damn pretty that I can’t seem to pull the trigger.
The dimensions are pretty accurate since I modeled them off of some BikeCAD drawings that Dan sent me from my proportions. It should be a freakishly tall and awesome bike. I am very excited.
The logos I slapped on there may or may not be final or positioned correctly, but I felt like I needed to include them so you would have an idea of how the white will look again the final color.
The handlebar bag isn’t something I own yet, but I’m working on getting it in that general gray/blue’ish color. The rest of the components are just swapped out from my Salsa. So… black tires, saddle, seat post and stem, silver crank and derailleurs.
My life is so difficult! Help!

+1 vote for Orange.
Orange.
Definitely orange.
All the coolest bikes are orange.
My, you do live a cushy life…
I have lusted after Mike Huber’s Orange Rivendell.. VERY pretty.
+1 for Orange.
Orange!
Dang, dude. How tall are you?! I learned how to really ride on a red Free Spirit that looked almost identical to what you’ve got up there, so I’m slightly swayed in that direction… so I’m gonna be a contrarian and go with Red (and potentially validate the results since utter landsides are always suspicious).
Do it Orange.
That way, I can order a red one!
Thanks for the support, everyone! I’m pretty close to pulling the trigger on this one. You all obviously have strong opinions on the topic.
Narayan – I don’t know what you are talking about. I suffer from a crippling disease known as indecide…itis. It really affects my life in a melodramatic fashion.
K – I am 6’1″, but most of it is in my legs. That is why all my bikes look a little Frankenstein like. Usually they either have a very high seat and a toe overlap or the handlebars are too far away. The custom is definitely going to help that.
I vote red with K, but the Orange is unique and special like you!
xxoo
I love orange! But for some reason the red is speaking to me more (especially if its a deep red). If you do go with orange, I would be tempted to use the black logos.
Mom – shucks… *kicks dirt*
Chris – Man… This was probably a bad idea. I’ve “settled” on a color twice now. Now I’m not sure again. Logically, the orange should look awesome with black logos to match the tires and saddle, etc. But when I put it on screen, it just looks weird and Halloween themed. For whatever reason, the white version looks best on both. I think it might be because the orange is so dark.
Owwww… halloween. Yea, stay away from that!
…..Or run with it, and drop the handlebar bag for one of those plastic, candy collecting pumpkins.
It really looks nice in red, but orange will probably show off the lugs a little better. Not helping much, am I?
Orange with white decals. The orange looks better when wet/dirty than red for some reason, and it is just a dreamcicle. Who could resist that pun?
Disclaimer: my personal bikes are black, dark grey, various shades of blue, deep green, etc (except the Pirate bike. Everyone needs a Pirate bike). I’m not a good judge of bright bikes.
Cheers,
WMdeR.
Ya gotta go orange. This bike screams orange! and go with woody fenders…
Orange. Merckx would approve.
Orange fer sure! Like the General Lee.
I feel your pain, fit wise. I’m 6’2″, and apparently I have a slightly longer-than-normal torso and longer-than-normal femurs (yet my calves don’t look abnormally short…?). Even with a setback seatpost, I’ve found myself sliding the seat back on some bikes so I can get plumb over the spindles… and stems at like 110+. So I can only imagine how stoked you are to be able to throw a leg over a bike that fits *you* just right. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Orange!
Robert: my recently deceased Kestrel was red and I LOVED it – however it was a red I have never seen on another bike, most red bikes are a bluish red making them cold rather than hot hot hot. My orange Rivendell gets loads of comments and, as it is my winter/randonneuring bike, it is nice to have the bright sunshiney color to offset a typical grey northwest day/night. Last bit of advice – when we were agonizing over the color for our tandem and battling between 2 colors we were able to get tubing with the sample paints on them and held up components to them and it became instantly clear. You’d think basic silver and blacks go with any color but some actually look better in combination than others. If you go with red I’ll still happily suck your wheel on a ride!
you seem like a pink sort of guy. orange is nice though.
Both are VERY nice schemes, but if I had to lean one way – Red!
Oy! ANYTHING but orange! (Dukes of Hazard here we come!)
If it mist be one or the other, then a dark, brooding, blood red. Depending upon the latitude you have, the *perfect* color, though not on your plallet is just a shake or two away. Consider Apricot, or Peach. You will be seeing this color by the bucket loads in the next two weeks or so, keep an eye out for this:
Probably some 40 years ago an itinerant landscape gardener made a big sweep through the Pacific Northwet. Apparently he had LOTS of small rhodydendrons in this peach/apricot/champaign hew and they must have been cheap, cuase there are a ton of them out in the yards, parking stips, vacant lots, and commercial planting strips now. Big enough now to block picture windows, support tons of English Ivy, blotting out the street signs here and there. Keep your eyes open and when you see this beauty in morning light, your bike color will be just a formality. To really make it a wall hanger, consider pearlescent peach, or champaign.
And Hey, what’s this ‘pull thre trigger’ business? The paint is waaaay down the road on this project, you’ve got a lot of time to play with the possibilities. Don’t be so linear, you’re starting to sound old.
Yr Pal, Dr C
I’d go with green myself.
Hey, Robert, does Dan want any help with building a website for his new bike building business?
(I am clearly trying to figure out a way to get him to build me a free bike as well!)…
Indecisionitis is a crippling disease, and I am told that drinking lots of alcohol helps in getting a cure.
Dr. Codfish – Your vote is counted as “red”.
Geoff – I didn’t want to compete with your green bike.
Narayan – I never claimed it was “free” ;P
Besides… I’d be the first to jump on that website building myself if that were the case!
I’m telling the wife to pick me up a bottle of Makers to help with the decision process. Thanks for the tip.
Orange, indubitably.
